2008 Candidate Endorsements and
Voter Guide
Vote like your CHOICE depends on it.

Endorsed Candidates

Valinda Bolton for State Rep. District 47
Diana Maldonado for State Rep. District 52
Sherrie Matula for State Rep. District 129
Kristi Thibaut for State Rep. District 133
Chris Bell for State Senate District 17

State House District 47, Valinda Bolton (incumbent)
Party: Democrat
www.ValindaBolton.org

Valinda was named Freshman of the Year in 2007 by the Legislative Study Group after winning this seat, covering southwest Travis County, in 2006. She has worked hard, in and out of the Capitol, to prevent child abuse, domestic violence, and sexual assault, while also leading on affordable housing issues.

Representative Bolton has had a 100% Pro-Choice voting record since she was elected to the State House. During the 2007 session, she voted to re-allocate $5 million from the State's "fake clinic" program to child abuse prevention and Family Planning Services. The "fake clinic" program is comprised of Crisis Pregnancy Centers which are unlicensed, unregulated, biased conseling centers that are funded by Texas taxpayer dollars.

We need your help to re-elect Representative Bolton so that she can continue the fight for access to real and affordable family-planning services for all Texans.

State House District 52, Diana Maldonado (open seat)
Party: Democrat
www.DianaMaldonado.com

Diana is former President of the Round Rock Independent School District Board of Trustees and has made education the centerpiece of her campaign to represent the growing communities just north of Austin.

Her opponent, Bryan Daniel, has been endorsed by two Anti-Choice organizations. We need to elect Diana Maldonado because she will work toward the common-ground goal of teaching our young people honest and medically accurate sex-education in order to prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion. She knows that whether you're Pro-Choice or Pro-Life, we should all be Pro-Prevention.

State House District 129, Sherrie Matula (challenger)
Party: Democrat
www.SherrieMatula.com

Sherrie is a longtime public school teacher and two-term member of the Board of Trustees of the Clear Creek Independent School District. She has served as President of the Galveston County Education District and on the board of the Texas State Teachers Association.

In Harris county, which includes all of Sherrie's district, 1 out of every 3 women is uninsured. There are also only 26 Family Planning Clinics in the county attempting to serve 33,503 women, according to the new report, Women Left Behind (2008).

Sherrie Matula will not let these problems go unaddressed, but she can't do it without your help. Vote for Sherrie Matula on November 4th, and help her get elected to the State House.

State House District 133, Kristi Thibaut (challenger)
Party: Democrat
www.VoteThibaut.com

Kristi is running to put her extensive public, non-profit, and private sector experience to work for her constituents. She has worked for the American Heart Association, the Texas Wildlife Association, and served as a legislative aide at the Capitol. As a wife and mother, Kristi is committed to policies that really value families like access to a quality education, affordable health care, and a chance to go to college.

Her opponent, Jim Murphy, tries to sell himself as a family man, but he voted against both Amendment 20 and Amendment 31 to House Bill 1 in 2007. These amendments were voted on 3/29/2007 and would have re-allocated $5 million from the State's Crisis Pregnancy Center, or "fake clinic", program to child abuse prevention and/or Family Planning Services respectively. Both amendments failed adoption, due to Representatives like Murphy who would rather use Texas taxpayer dollars to fund unlicensed, unregulated, biased conseling centers.

Kristi Thibaut is a leader committed to supporting the values of privacy, freedom, and personal responsibility. There are over 10 of these "fake clinics" in Houston, where her district is, and if we elect Kristi Thibuat to the State House, she will have the opportunity to support real reproductive health care for women.

State Senate District 17, Chris Bell (special election)
Party: Democrat
www.ChrisBell.com

Chris Bell has represented his fellow Texans on the Houston City Council and in the US House of Representatives. He became a prime target of the infamous 2003 Republican redistricting effort in the Texas Legislature, and he was defeated in his bid for re-election after his district was redrawn.

In Congress, he maintained a 100 percent voting record on NARAL’s issues, and was a leader in ethics reform. Now he sits on our national board of directors and we are proud to endorse him in the special election to fill the seat of retiring Republican Senator Kyle Janek.

Chris Bell has always been there for us, and now we need to be there for him. Find out more about how you can help elect Chris Bell to the State Senate, and don't forget to Vote Pro-Choice on November 4th.
